Later, Issan requested Gyosan, “What was the which means of Obaku’s coming into the meditation corridor?”
Gyosan stated, “Two sides of a die.”
Commentary:
Gyosan’s remark ‘Two sides of a die’ signifies that the 2 solutions made by Rinzai and the top monk are the identical though they could seemingly sound completely different from one another, since each are from the true-Self which is known as a die right here. To rephrase this, irrespective of what number of methods the true-Self could also be expressed in, the essence stays the identical. In different phrases, the style of water from a spring is identical, it doesn’t matter what vessel it might be scooped up with.
Scholar: “What’s the die like?”
Grasp: “Numerous sides.”
Scholar: “What’s the spring like?”
Grasp: “Bottomless.”
