Rinzai 236
Rinzai got here to Kingyu. Seeing him strategy, Kingyu sat down on the gate barring it along with his employees. Rinzai struck the employees 3 times along with his hand, went into the monks’ corridor and sat himself down within the first place. Kingyu got here after, noticed him, and remarked, “When visitor and host meet, the standard courtesies are noticed. Elder, the place have you ever come from to be so unwell mannered?” Rinzai retorted, “What are you mumbling, outdated venerable?” When Kingyu was about to open his mouth. Rinzai hit him. As Kingyu pretended to fall down, Rinzai hit him once more. Kingyu noticed, “It’s not my day at this time.”
Commentary:
Kingyu examined Rinzai by sitting down on the gate barring it along with his employees, by which he meant ‘Are you aware what I’m revealing by way of these actions to you?’ Rinzai, sensing his intention, responded by tapping the employees 3 times along with his hand, going into the monks’ corridor and sitting himself down within the first place. This implies, ‘I do know that you just need to see if I’m conscious of the true-Self. The actions of my tapping your employees, going into the monks’ corridor and sitting down within the first place are the features of the true-Self’. Kingyu examined Rinzai once more with ‘When visitor and host meet, the standard courtesies are noticed. Elder, the place have you ever come from to be so unwell mannered?’. Rinzai’s response ‘What are you mumbling, outdated venerable?’ means ‘I’m not deceived by your phrases since I do know that you’re revealing the true-Self to see whether or not I can recognise it or not’. When Kingyu was about to open his mouth to disclose the true-Self by saying one thing, Rinzai, sensing his intention, hit him, by which he meant ‘I do know that you just imply to point out me this’. Ultimately, Kingyu performed a trick on Rinzai by pretending to fall down, however Rinzai, not being fooled by his trick, responded properly by hitting him once more. Kingyu, realising that he couldn’t deceive Rinzai, accepted Rinzai’s enlightenment by observing, “It’s not my day at this time.”

Issan requested Gyosan, “Who of these two masters gained and who misplaced?” Gyosan replied, “If one gained, the opposite gained, too. If one misplaced, the opposite one misplaced, too.”
Commentary:
Later Issan requested Gyosan about what had occurred between Kingyu and Rinzai. Gyosan meant that there was no winner and no loser as a result of each of them had been enlightened and since there is no such thing as a distinction when every part is one as Vacancy.
